Moderator: Chris Carter , Director of the Rehabilitation Programs Division, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Huntsville, Texas Speaker: Cheri Oz , Special Agent in Charge, Phoenix Field Division, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Phoenix, Arizona B-2D Community Partnership for Violence Reduction Initiatives Room 126C Tracks: Reentry/Community Corrections The purpose of the Focused Deterrence Initiative is to reduce violent offenses by identifying a small group of community crime drivers responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime. Participants are selected based upon persistent violent
crime charges and/or identified as a high violent by the risk and need assessment. Participants must attend a face-to-face call-in meeting with community partners, federal, state and local law enforcement. The call-in concentrates on the participant’s criminal history, victim patterns, and connects them with the resources to succeed. Success is based upon the continued partnership with law enforcement, community supervision and community partners. Learning Objectives: • Describe the identification of targeted offenders for the focused deterrence model. • Understand the roles of law enforcement, probation and parole and community partners. • Identify strategies to reduce violent crime in metropolitan areas.
