B-1B Testifying 101: Testifying in Court and/or in Deposition Room 126A Track: Staff Training Departments of Correction are the subject of constant litigation. Our employees at every level are subject to suit and are often faced with the daunting task of having to participate in depositions, hearings and even trials. Much of the success of any given case rests on the ability of those that are testifying to be able to provide truthful and detailed information in a way that exhibits knowledge and trustworthiness. This workshop will explain the ins and outs of being a witness and testifying. It will cover how to present yourself physically, through tone of voice and even by demeanor when being questioned. Participants will learn the intricacies of the legal process and the nuts and bolts of direct and cross examination. Participants will learn how to control the tempo of any questioning and how to convey confidence that bolsters the credibility not only of themselves but of the information they are testifying to. Additionally, having this understanding of how the day-to-day operations of corrections translates in a courtroom setting will aid staff in conducting themselves on a daily basis in a manner that aids in future litigation against their respective departments. Learning Objectives: • Understand how the legal process works with regard to witness testimony both in court and in depositions. • Explore the nuances of direct and cross examination and how to remain calm, focused and in control of their testimony as a witness. • Review how to present themselves in court and deposition during testimony. • Understand the importance of demeanor, tone of voice, eye contact, etc. when testifying as a witness in any proceeding. B-1A Keeping Prisons Safe: Drug Interdiction & Security Assessment Strategies Room 125B Track: Prisons The “Keeping Prisons Safe: Drug Interdiction & Security Assessment Strategies” will be a 90-minute presentation highlighting the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Correction’s effort to combat violence within their facilities and provide insight into their multi-layered approach with drug interdiction. ODRC will present on such subtopics as data tracking, human intelligence gathering, drug testing, tactical teams and K9 assets, security threat group identification, fundamental back to basics security practices, how ODRC has remodeled how incoming mail is processed, technology efforts with drone and drug detection and the utilization of vulnerability assessment teams. Learning Objectives: • Understand how to apply a multi-layered approach in combating prison violence and drug interdiction. • Understand the current challenges facing correctional facilities with the advancement of synthetic drugs and drone conveyance. • Understand the importance of data tracking to make informed operational decisions from the Director’s position to the managing officer.
