A-3D Collateral Damage: The Crisis in Correctional Officer Vacancies Room 126C Tracks: Prisons/Jails COVID-19 put thousands of people out of work in the U.S. Now, businesses are beginning to open, but many people have changed their minds about work or are looking at different careers. Employers are desperate for workers. The economic climate has pivoted as workers are in great demand and employers are having to do more to attract staff. This is true in correctional facilities across the U.S, as well. In many states, correctional facilities are operating at minimum staffing levels. Inmate work and educational programs are being temporarily suspended because there are not enough correctional officers to supervise the inmates. This workshop will review the reasons for the workforce shortage in corrections and discuss possible solutions. Learning Objectives: • Understand what the contributing factors to the large number of vacancies in correctional officer positions. • Consider factors outside the field of corrections that contribute to a shortage of qualified correctional officer candidates and how corrections can identify and anticipate these “outside influences.” • Discuss short- and long-range strategies
