C-4B Enhancing the Competencies and Public Image of Correctional Employees Room 126A Track: Staff Training Sponsored by the Professional Development Committee The session will provide an overview of the current difficulties and obstacles to building a high-quality correctional workforce. We will identify the causes and correlation between poor public image and an unstable workforce. Solutions offered: 1. A project that brings awareness to the fallacies about corrections work, educating both staff and public about the purpose of corrections and the refined skill set needed of the workforce. 2. A project that honestly assesses internal faults and the unhealthy cultures that drive this negative image, and discusses steps to change from within, so image improvement is possible and recruitment pools are expanded. Learning Objectives: • Articulate the dominate reasons corrections has a poor image and the need to elevate professionalism, competencies and workplace culture in order to bring a change. • Understand the fallacies of the negative perceptions and how to equip the staff to enhance corrections careers by improving competencies and language around this work. • Understand what is driving unhealthy workplace cultures, and what resources are to circumvent this negative cycle. Moderator: Tracy L. Reveal , Ph.D., Parole Board Member, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Columbus, Ohio Speakers: Kristi Miller Anderson , Ph.D., Research and Programs Officer, 4 th Purpose Foundation, Knoxville, Tennessee; Kevin Genovese , Warden, Tennessee Department of Corrections, Nashville, Tennessee

C-4A PREA and the LGBTI Community: Are You Keeping Your Inmates/Residents Safe? Room 125B Tracks: Prisons/Jails LGBTI populations are statistically more vulnerable to sexual abuse than other offenders. Correctional facilities continue to struggle with the best way to ensure safe housing of LGBTI inmates/residents without bringing unwanted, unnecessary attention to these individuals, or violating requirements set forth in PREA standards. Staff do not understand current terminologies used by, and for LGBTI individuals, thus are largely untrained as to how to respectfully, and professionally address transgender men and women in their custody and care. Learning Objectives: • Review ways to improve communication with LGBTI inmate/resident populations. • Enhance investigations of inmate sexual abuse by understanding LGBTI terminologies and options for ensuring safe housing for this vulnerable population. • Improve PREA compliance through understanding LGBTI populations, and effective policies and procedures related to how staff are to engage and support transgender and intersex individuals. Moderator: Linda Janes , Chief Operating Officer, Alvis, Columbus, Ohio Speaker: Ramona Wheeler , Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), Society of Human Resource Management — Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), Department of Justice-Certified PREA Auditor, Alvis, Columbus, Ohio
