B-1A Journey to Eliminate Restrictive Housing in the Virginia Department of Corrections Room 239 Track: Prisons Sponsored by Adult Corrections Ad Hoc Committee For the past 5 years, the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) has progressively reduced its use of Restrictive Housing in its correctional facilities. In January 2020, the agency initiated the final step of this journey to fully eliminate the practice using enhanced structured and unstructured programs for a minimum of four hours per day. The agency is moving forward with a vision of a Restorative Housing initiative that focuses on programs geared towards individual risk and needs, diverting vulnerable populations and long-term public safety. This workshop will provide an overview of the steps taken in Virginia to lead the agency towards this progressive reform, to include best practices and lessons learned. Learning Objectives: 1.Learn the steps used to develop system wide change to reform the Restrictive Housing program
