A-1I The Future of Use of Force Policies: Emphasizing Behavioral Interventions and De-escalation to Enhance Safety for All Room 252 Tracks: Prisons/Jails Sponsored by the PD Committee As the American Correctional Association has led the way for changing use of force terminology, it has concurrently encouraged agencies to rethink the way incarcerated individuals are managed in times of crises. This workshop will highlight the efforts of the first jail and prison agencies to implement policy to incorporate behavioral intervention techniques, while also emphasizing the value of slowing down responses to situations, with the goal of de-escalating them to gain compliance of the incarcerated individual. Administrative strategies for policy formulation, legal and union considerations will be discussed. If your agency is planning a policy revision pertaining to behavioral interventions, you’ll want to attend. Learning Objectives: 1.Identify the agencies values and ensure those are reflected throughout the policy by way of its purpose and policy statement, up through and including how the agency will respond if/when policy is violated.
