C-3B Filling the Void: The Crisis in Correctional Officer Vacancies Room 242 Tracks: Prisons/Jails At the 2022 ACA Winter Conference, the workshop titled, “Collateral Damage: The Crisis in Correctional Officer Vacancies,” examined the severe shortages of correctional officers across the U.S., the impact those shortages were having on correctional facilities, and the reasons for the workforce shortages. This workshop is a follow-up to that workshop and will focus on what three states are doing to create innovative approaches to attract and retain qualified correctional officers. Panel members will describe the tools and technology they are using to address recruitment and retention challenges. New pathways will be discussed to identify more diverse pools of applicants, and strategies to enhance employee retention, and reduce turnover. Learning Objectives: 1.Identify recruitment strategies that go beyond traditional approaches that are not working. 2.Describe what other states are doing to strengthen retention and reduce turnover.
