About Inmate Suicide? (CE, Y CE) Room 2

This unacceptable high rate of suicides in our nation’s prisons and jails cannot be ignored because it threatens the very fabric of our penal systems. While suicide prevention efforts are undoubtedly important, equally important is to take a bird’s-eye view of who, what, when, why, and how suicide occurred in our systems. Taking this approach gives us a glimpse of who these victims are. A collection of suicide data from several correctional facilities, a review of Illinois State psychological autopsies provides some clues why these individuals commit suicide. Learning Objectives: • Identify the who, what, when, why, and how individuals who died by suicide in prisons and jails. • Explain the reasons how externalized behaviors and habituation to self-injury play a role in suicide.
