A-4H Emergency Planning for Juvenile Justice Residential Facilities

Room 3 Emergencies and disasters can strike any location in the country making juvenile justice facilities vulnerable to disasters and emergencies. Furthermore, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has noted that the number of disasters declared by the Federal government has doubled over the last decade. The content of this session will be heavily focused on the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) resource, Emergency Planning For Juvenile Justice Residential Facilities. Participants will be hear about the emergency preparedness cycle, key tips to remember for emergency planning, defining what an all hazards approach entails for a juvenile facility, functions of a chain of command during an emergency, and essential elements of a facility disaster/ emergency plan. Learning Objectives: • Participants will be introduced to the OJJDP resource entitled Emergency Planning for Juvenile Justice Residential Facilities. • Participants will be able to identify the five components of the Emergency Preparedness Cycle as developed by FEMA. • Participants will be able to basically discuss components of an effective juvenile facility emergency/disaster plan. Administrators (CJJA) has recognized and given increased attention to the importance of staff wellness and its impact on the overall facility culture, atmosphere and environment, to include its impact on conditions of confinement and incidents of violence. The corrections environment presents exceptional challenges to maintaining balance and wellness in life. Without a clear plan to mitigate the chronic stress and inherent hazards in the workplace, serious medical issues and difficulty being present in life outside of work may be the result. This workshop will review occupational signs of stress, ways to recognize warning signs of dangerous stress levels and strategies to make changes in daily routines to preserve authenticity and balance. This workshop will explore the personal and professional effects of stress and strategies for wellness for direct care and administrative staff in corrections, with a focus on juvenile justice facilities. Learning Objectives: • Accept the reality of the risks in the workplace, and define primary and secondary trauma and effects. • Review the warning signs and effects of prolonged, chronic stress. • Address the key points for developing healthy strategies to maintain balance and wellness.
