A-1H Another Brick “Out” of the Wall : Correctional Facility Deconstruction Creates Jobs Training and Cost Savings Room 5A As prison facilities age, it is important to consider the most

efficient and environmentally responsible ways to demolish those structures. Deconstruction has shown to be the most effective way to remove buildings that have reached their end of their useful lives. This workshop will provide an overview of the research behind the value of prison deconstruction and Domicology from Michigan State University. The Virginia Department of Corrections will share their experience with deconstruction as they finish their third facility with a 99.5% material diversion rate. Topics covered will include how to plan for deconstruction, the job skills and training provided for offenders, and how salvaged materials can be reused or recycled. Learning Objectives: • Identify necessary steps in the planning process for correctional facility deconstruction. • Understand the deconstruction process and how it contributes to reentry programming. • Understand the role of material diversion in generating cost savings. A-1G NYS DOCCS Office of Special Investigations : Rethinking, Rebuilding, and Redesigning Internal Affairs in Corrections Room 3 NYS will present a summary of

its creation of a unique and capable internal investigations office. The presentation will include, proactive strategies, personnel changes, appropriate staff, union vs. non-union investigators, and traditional functions vs. new missions. Specific attention will be given regarding the need to address emerging prison problems and using the internal affairs office to develop internal policies and advance broader statewide political goals. Learning Objectives: • Identify the steps necessary to create an OSI. • Identify areas and steps necessary to improve an existing IA office. • Describe benefits of an expanded OSI.
