C-1A Transgender Care in Corrections (CE, Y CE, CME) Room 2
Sponsored by the Behavioral Health Committee
This session is intended to facilitate staff awareness of offenders who identify as transgender and of the need to provide appropriate care and management. Few of us, whether on the treatment or on the security side of the house, have much experience with this population. To understand how corrections have engaged with this issue, we reviewed a sample of state and federal policies and procedures regarding transgender care and management. During this presentation, we will briefly review relevant legal cases that direct and inform our practices and spend most of the time highlighting and discussing survey results and best practices related to culture, training, management and treatment considerations. We will present a flow chart representing best practices from the materials reviewed. The flow chart provides a simple, yet comprehensive template that one can use to inform the development of transgender care in one’s jurisdiction. Learning Objectives: • Recognize the importance of providing competent care and management of the transgender offender in the correctional environment. • Understand the critical decision points of care and management of the transgender offender from designation through reentry. • Identify best practices within the field that will inform the development of transgender offender care and management policies and procedures.
