FCC announces rulemaking on cell phone jamming FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced the FCC will vote on a proposal to allow prisons to jam contraband cellphones for the first time. The announcement followed a roundtable with Senator Tom Cotton, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Attorney General Tim
Griffin and public safety leaders. Officials underscored the growing threat of smuggled phones, which are used to continue criminal opera tions from behind bars. This effort builds on the Cell phone Jamming Reform Act, introduced in March by Rep. David Kustoff (R-TN) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) with support from public safety leaders, including the Ameri can Correctional Association. That legislation would authorize state and federal prisons to deploy jam ming technology to block contraband devices in inmate housing areas. Supporters stress that the measure is vital for public safety, disrupting inmates’ ability to traffic drugs, co ordinate escapes and direct violence from inside correctional facilities. CT
