National Correctional Officers and Employees Week 2026

Honoring corrections professionals

S ince a Presidential Proclamation established it in 1984, the first week of May has been set aside to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of America’s correctional officers and employees. This observance, known as National Correction Officers Week, was first created by President Ronald Reagan, who noted, “The professionalism, dedication and courage exhibited by these officers throughout the performance of these demanding and often conflicting roles deserves our utmost respect. The important work of correctional officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections.” In 1996, Congress broadened the scope of this week to include all correctional employees, offering overdue gratitude to every woman and man serving our nation in corrections. National Correctional Officers and Employees Week (NCOEW) stands as a moment to celebrate our profession and elevate the appreciation owed to those who support it. At a time of immense challenges, U.S. correctional institutions continue to model the principles of jus tice, safety and rehabilitation. We work tirelessly to improve, while our remarkable correctional officers and employees demonstrate resilience as they navigate the vital balance between maintaining order and fostering rehabilitation. Their commitment and sacrifice in protecting public safety truly merit wider recognition. The American Correctional Association invites all Americans to join us in celebrating National Correctional Officers and Employees Week from May 3–9, 2026. The women and men working in corrections form a courageous community — individuals who serve largely out of the public eye. This week allows their stories to be shared and their dedication to be honored as it should be.

With the highest honor and respect,

Ricky D. Dixon ACA 109th President
