Ed Cass’ vast storehouse of knowledge of state and city corrections remains unsurpassed. To him belongs the lion’s share of the credit for estab lishing the sound operational base that the ACA enjoys today. There were contributions from others, but none could match his long span of years. Those whose ACA affiliation is pre-1963 are familiar with many “Casserisms,” such as “presidents come and go — but we do all the work!” or “It took too many long, lean years to build the ACA treasury to have some Johnny-come-lately show up and want to spend it all!”

Article summary: Edward R. Cass, a towering figure in American corrections, dedicated over 63 years to the improving the correctional field. Beginning in 1913, he guided the Prison Association of New York and the American Correctional Association, shaping policy, providing financial stability and ensuring the highest professional standards. Cass championed humane treatment, disdained harsh practices and advanced rehabilitation through education and labor programs. His legacy includes the prestigious E.R. Cass Correctional Achievement Award, honoring his lifelong commitment to improving cor rectional systems nationwide. Why this is still relevant today: Cass’s vision of humane, rehabilita tive corrections remains vital as modern systems grapple with many of the same challenges faced in his time. His emphasis on professional standards, fiscal responsi bility and evidence-based practices mirrors today’s push for accountability and reform. The principles he championed—dignity, education and constructive work—are cornerstones of contemporary correctional philosophy. In an era of criminal justice transformation, Cass’s enduring influ ence reminds us that progress depends on leadership, collaboration and unwavering dedication to improving corrections.

At the time of his retirement he had guided the progress of the ACA for nearly half of its then 93 years of existence.

Ed’s penurious management, while difficult to endure at times because of his ultra-conservatism, served to establish the financial base of ACA. About Ed Cass, the man — a blunt, forthright, pugna cious individual, who could disturb the status quo at the drop of the proverbial hat! — and enjoy it! No one ever daunted him. No one ever awed him. One of the true “Deans of American Corrections,” Ed had no qualms about “taking on” all who deigned to disagree with him — and, often, they were legion! At one time the “Young Turks,” themselves all now retired, made a short-lived attempt that smouldered until about 1955 when Ed was persuaded to re-think some of his earlier convictions because of the changing times. At the time of his retirement he had guided the progress of the ACA for nearly half of its then 93 years of existence. A man of great pride and indomitable ego, he would defend his twin organizations with ferocity,
