Certification Spotlight

Why I chose to become certified

By Sgt. Adam Gonzalez, CCM

I t can often be difficult to quantify our work into just a few sen- tences. Even the newest members of our teams soon realize that we wear many hats and perform many different functions. Afterall, it is truly a public service that corrections professionals deliver each day. Like much in life, there can be times when staff relevance can appear mundane, monotonous or inconsequential. There are times when corrections professionals are tempted to al- low obstacles, and the challenges ahead, seem overwhelming. Yet, corrections professionals must never forget, or ever devalue, our critical role in criminal justice and victim services. These letters inspire confidence and mutual respect en- dorsed by an organization with 150 years of working towards the better- ment of our profession. I admire and applaud ACA for be- ing the premier agency of change for both national and international cor- rectional standards and accreditation. ACA accreditation can be earned by public safety agencies. These

opportunities can bring increased prestige, honor and accountability upon our principled profession, and the facilities with which we serve. Furthermore, this recognition brings strength, confidence and the reassur- ance that our communities and its members are being served by higher standards and expected practices respected worldwide. This certification has improved my career development in several ways. Accomplishing professional certification indicates my desire to promote correctional best-practices and forward progression. Sec- ond, this certification elevates my
