“charismatic leader and dynamic speaker,” Dr. Dean Aufderheide created a legacy unparalleled in the field of correctional mental health care. Currently, Dr. Aufderheide is Executive Director of the American Board of Correctional Psychology and Chief of Mental Health Services for the Florida Department of Corrections. But before he took on these responsibilities, Dr. Aufderheide served as a Captain in the U.S. Army and the Chief of Psychology at Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart. After a distinguished career in private practice and education, he became the Senior Psychologist at the Walton Correctional Institution in Florida and quickly rose from Regional Director of Mental Health for the Florida Department of Corrections to Assistant Director to his current position. In his time with the American Correctional Association, he has performed yeoman’s service on the Standards Committee, Healthcare Commit - tee and Substance Use Disorder Committee while providing exemplary leadership as the Chair of the Behavioral Health Committee. Dr. Aufderheide also created the first APA- approved Doctoral Psychology Internship and Post-Doctoral Residency programs as well as
playing a key role in the development of ACA training materials, including the Correctional Behavioral Health certification training for officers. He is currently the American Correctional Association’s National Mental Health Expert. Throughout Dr. Aufderheide’ career, he has been a tremendous example of professionalism and excellence in the arena of mental health in the corrections field. As a prolific author and standing room-only speaker, he has spread his deep knowledge and meticulous research on best practices to thousands of other professionals. There is no way to count the number of individuals who have received superior mental health care because of the fine work of Dr. Aufderheide.
