Burl Cain (MS) Commissioner Mississippi Department of Corrections
Burl Cain is the newly appointed commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Prior to this appointment, Cain served as the warden of Louisiana State Penitentiary for over 20 years, where he brought much needed reform and innovation including instituting one-of-a-kind programing such as the accredited hospice program, Reentry Court program, and an accredited de - gree program through the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Cain also served as a regional warden from 2007 until his retirement in 2015 overseeing five correctional facilities in Louisiana. He currently serves on ACA’s Religion and Faith-Based Services Committee and the Resolutions and Policy Development Committee. He was the recipient of the 2013 E.R. Cass Award for Excellence in Corrections and is also a Certified Corrections Execu - tive. Cain earned a bachelor’s degree in vocational agriculture from Louisiana State University and his master’s degree in criminal justice from Grambling State University.
Mark Cranston (NJ) Warden Middlesex County Adult Correction & Youth Services
Mark Cranston has more than 32 years of corrections experience and currently serves as the Warden of the Middlesex County, NJ Adult Correction & Youth Services facility. Prior to this, Cranston served for over 25 years with the New York City Department of Correction. He started as a corrections officer in 1987 and was promoted up through each uniformed rank. He retired as first deputy commissioner in 2014. In this capacity, he was second in command and responsible for the overall operation of the department, which housed 12,000 inmates and had an annual operating budget of approximately $1 billion. Cranston also held the position of chief of staff at the New Jersey Department of Correction from 2010–2013. As chief of staff, he was second in charge of the entire prison system with an inmate population of 24,000.
