non-compliant inmates to a less desirable part of the facility. I recommend this book for correctional practitioners who need a comprehensive suicide and self -harm plan and/or those who are considering accreditation with ACA or the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Correctional and medical health practitioners who work in a criminal justice environment where suicide prevention and treatment protocols, including screening and transition

planning, are well established might not find anything new in this book. Judges, attorneys, prosecutors and other court officials who make custody decisions should use this resource, with attention to the diversion piece. The court process itself needs improvements; delays in hearings, rescheduled court dates, unrealistic plea offers, failure of lawyers to explain options and failure to promote diversion programs are sources of angst for pre-trial inmates (and will continue

to be important even if cash bail is removed). As suggested by Tartaro, and supported by an increasing number of officials, the public health framework should be applied to suicide in custody. While conditions of confinement do affect a person’s mental health, the conditions prior to confinement are more significant. Finally, this research should be used to inform legislators and others who make decisions about budgets and organizations, particularly to strengthen collaboration. u
