National Correctional Officers and Employees Week
May 3–9, 2020
Never Forgotten
Since 1982, there has been a week dedicated to correctional officers and employees. For the first week in May, the country is called to remember the work done by the men and women working in our correctional facilities nationwide. This time of recognition, National Correctional Officers Week, was first allotted by former President Ronald Reagan, who said, “The professionalism, dedication, and cour- age exhibited by these officers throughout the performance of these demanding and often conflicting roles deserve our utmost respect. The important work of correctional officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and ac- complishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections.” In 1996, Congress expanded National Correctional Officers Week to include all correctional employ- ees, making it what it is today. This long overdue “thank you” was given to all employees working in American correctional facilities. These high-risk jobs ensure the safety of the millions of people. As U.S. facilities strive to become better, correctional officers and employees are involved in the continued work toward the balance between rehabilitation and order. This year, we are taking particular effort to highlight facilities moving into the future and ensuring best results and best practices for all. The American Correctional Association proudly calls upon all Americans to join us as we honor our profession and the work of our colleagues around the country during National Correctional Officers and Employees Week from May 3-9, 2020. We will, once again, affirm that those who work in the corrections industry represent a committment and a courageous community of American heroes. We will continue to celebrate their work this year, next year and every year. With the highest honor and respect,
James A. Gondles Jr., CAE Executive Director
