These trainings are designed to introduce new management/leader- ship skills and improve those that are already held by the participants. The takeaway from this training does not only benefit the participants as employees, but also the organization as a whole and their lives outside of work. As Coops put it, “This class benefitted us as individuals … be- cause of the many things we learned also apply outside of work, it also benefitted our relationships and suc- cess outside of work.” Cindy Gomez is a certification specialist at the American Correctional Association. Jessalyn Halbritter is a professional development specialist at the American Correctional Association.

“We learned that there are many kinds of power, where we get most of ours, and that having multiple sources of power is much more ef- fective than relying only on one,” Coops said. “We learned the many roles that are needed for effective teams, and learned, first-hand, the pitfalls of having some of those roles over-covered, and some not covered at all. So even though we have natu- ral roles that we gravitate toward, sometimes a group will need us to fill a role that is less natural for us in order for the team to achieve the best results.” She also spoke about how the pre- class assessments and class activities helped them to gain a better under- standing of their strengths and areas
