Honoring the fallen, uplifting the mission
The first week of May marks National Corrections Officers and Employees Week as it has since it was fully inaugurated in 1984. It is a special week set aside to honor the mission of correctional officers and employees and the day-to-day sacrifices they make to safeguard the public. Correctional officers and employees face a myriad of challenges in discharging their crucial du ties. Through the problems created by short staffing, physical and mental barriers and a challenging legal environment, corrections professionals remain steadfast in keeping the public and their popu lations safe and secure.
These brave women and men deserved more than ever to be celebrated for their tireless efforts to keep us safe.
That’s why we celebrate the work done by Correctional Officers and Correctional Employees.
As President Reagan’s proclamation founding this important week says:
“The important work of correctional officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections.” These seven days are the time we stop to recognize these great public servants, but we should not hesitate to make every day an opportunity to revere, exalt and treasure all of the women and men in corrections.
Sincerely,
