Conference Overview
He did not disappoint as the crowd enjoyed a rollicking and fun 45-minute conversation be tween Jelly Roll and President Denise Robinson. Robinson led Jelly Roll through his life and career and how the corrections system helped him reframe his mind and put him on a path to success. Jelly Roll ended with some words for corrections officers everywhere: “I would tell you all no matter how low it feels and how unim pactful it feels I want to encourage you to keep throwing those hail Mary’s, keep shooting those baskets.” But Jelly Roll wasn’t done. Accompanied on guitar by his cameraman, he sang his hit song “Need a Favor” for the assembled crowd who burst into thunderous applause. The Exhibit Hall opened just after the last strains of Jelly Roll’s song ended and the huge room became a beehive of activity.
Friday evening saw a sold out Schermerhorn Symphony Center host the E.R. Cass award banquet. Arthur F. “Art” Beeler, Jr. and Douglas “Doug” Dretke were the 2024 E.R. Cass award recipients, and they gave heartfelt and moving speeches.
