D-2B The Importance of Accreditation Myths and Realities Track: ACA Resources Room 201-B A leader’s view of the importance of ACA Accreditation. Three Director’s/Commissioners of state correctional agencies and two Sheriffs will discuss the importance of achieving and maintaining ACA Accreditation in their organization. This will assist participants in understanding the importance and why agencies seek ACA Accreditation, which they can use to share with their staff. Moderator: Dehavilland Whitaker , Director of Professional Development, American Correctional Association, Alexandria, Virginia Speakers: Bryan Collier , Executive Director, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Huntsville, Texas; Annette Chambers-Smith , Director, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Columbus, Ohio; Gary McFadden , Sheriff, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Charlotte, North Carolina; Ricky Dixon , Secretary, Florida Department of Corrections, Tallahassee, Florida D-2C Utilizing Citizens with Lived Experience to Ensure Education, Treatment and Reentry Policies and Practices are Equitable and Cultivate Previously incarcerated community leaders share important characteristics contributing to their evolution into organizational catalysts and placing them at the intersection of different communities and systems. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services has convened two committees that rely on these leaders to ensure that policy, practices and programming, behind and beyond the fence, lead to equitable opportunities and positive change in our prisons and a successful reentry back into their community for all incarcerated persons. D-2A Using Staff Surveys to Monitor Climate and Safety Trends Track: ACA Resources Room 201-A Beginning in 2012, VADOC has conducted annual employee surveys inviting all staff to use their VOICE to improve their work environment. Employees anonymously self-report demographics and voice their opinions on various topics such as agency initiatives, job satisfaction, job safety, reentry, diversity and inclusion. Through employee participation, agency leadership is made aware of areas of strength and needed improvements. This workshop will highlight the development of the survey through initially partnering with the Urban Institute to eventually conduct the survey internally. The types of questions, campaigns and reporting will be detailed to show how VADOC has maintained high response rates as well as how this information is used. Learning Objectives: • Develop and implement an effective employee survey. • Utilize strategies to encourage participation in employee surveys and keep response rates high. • Understand the impact of employee survey development on agency initiatives, job satisfaction, job safety, reentry, diversity and inclusion.
