PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY
Commissioner Randall Liberty has served as the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Corrections for eight years. He began his career at the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office in 1989 as a Deputy Sheriff. Over twenty-six years, he served as a Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Major, Chief Deputy and as the elected Sheriff for nine years. During his tenure as Chief and Sheriff, he implemented award winning programs for Justice Involved Military Veterans, treatment for substance use disorder and professional development of his team. He served as the President of the Maine Sheriffs Association, Maine’s Board of Corrections and as Chairman of the Board of Visitors at the University of Maine (Augusta). Commissioner Liberty served in the Army as a Military Policeman in Korea, and an additional twenty-one years in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves. During this time, he served as a Mountain Infantryman in Italy, as a Drill Sergeant, and as an Instructor at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY. Liberty’s last assignment was in 2004 as the Command Sergeant Major of a Military Transition Team, imbedded with 772 Iraqi Infantryman in the City of Fallujah where he received the Bronze Star. Liberty is a three-time State of Maine Law Enforcement Officer of the year. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the National Sheriffs Leadership Institute and the New England Chiefs of Police Command Course. He earned a Masters in Management and Leadership from Liberty University and a B.S. in Public Administration from the University of Maine (Augusta). Liberty served as the Warden of the Maine State Prison where he reduced restrictive housing, enhanced education, prioritized wellness for his staff and created a Veterans Pod. He currently serves as the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Corrections where he focuses on staff wellness, professional development and creating a normalized correctional environment.
