PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY
April Buckner began her career with the Tennessee Department of Correction as a Probation/Parole Officer in 2004. During her tenure, she has worked as an Offender Workforce Development/Reentry Specialist and was promoted to Probation/Parole Manager. After serving as Probation/Parole Manager for a year, she was promoted to the Statewide Director for Community Resources. In 2016, April was then promoted to her current position, Correctional Administrator of Rehabilitative Services for the West Region. In this role, she provides oversite for all rehabilitation and reentry programs to include education, behavioral health, and clinical services for 6 prisons in West TN. She also supervises two Day Reporting Centers in West TN., and supervises all Risk, Needs and Assessment Counselors in West TN. She is an active member of the American Correctional Association (ACA) and was elected in 2020 as a Delegate Assembly Member for ACA where she served on the Community-Based Organization Committee. In 2022, she was again elected to serve on the Community-Based Organization Committee as well as being elected to serve a four-year term as a Commissioner for Accreditation with ACA. She also serves as a Board Member for the Shelby County Crime Commission. April was also elected as President of her class for the 2021 Tennessee Government Executive Institute (TGEI) and is a member of the Association for Women Executives in Corrections. April possesses a deep passion for reentry and rehabilitation and has played an integral role in structuring multiple reentry initiatives within the department including the Tennessee Reentry Collaborative, the development and implementation of six Day Reporting Centers, Community Resource Centers, Transition Centers, and several rehabilitation programs within TDOC facilities and the community. April believes rehabilitation and reentry are key components to a successful transition to the community, reducing recidivism, and creating a safer Tennessee.
