PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY

Dr. LaShawnda D. Key serves as a Community Development Specialist for the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. Since joining state service in 2019, she has also served as a TAN Coordinator with Chaplaincy Services and as a Clinical Chaplain at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women. Dr. Key holds bachelor’s degrees in Biblical Studies and English, a Master of Divinity in Chaplaincy, and a Doctorate in Pastoral Counseling. She is an Associate Minister at Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church and serves on the board of the JLMBC Community Alliance. A passionate advocate for service and community engagement, Dr. Key volunteers with shelters and outreach organizations, helping provide essential resources and support to underserved populations. She also serves on the board of Lost Sheep Outreach Ministries, which assists individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Assigned to Division 4 in the mountains of North Carolina, Dr. Key works throughout the state to encourage and support justice-involved individuals. Her mission is to reduce recidivism by building strong community partnerships and ensuring returning citizens have access to the resources and support needed for successful reintegration. Her guiding philosophy is reflected in one of her favorite quotes: “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
