PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY

For the past twenty-six years I have worked in secondary and post-secondary education in the areas of school administration and student services. During this time, I have worked closely with students and teachers in urban school districts and instructors with real-world experience in industries seeking highly trained employees. I currently serve as the school principal at the NC Correctional Institution for Women where I put my educational leadership skills to great use in guiding adult offenders and their instructors in preparing students for college and careers with life skills needed to conquer the various challenges they will face upon their release from prison. I am a native of Raleigh, North Carolina where I attended Catholic school during my formative years. I attended Oral Roberts University for my undergraduate degree in English Literature. I spent three years in Baltimore, MD teaching middle grades language arts before moving back to Raleigh, NC to teach at St. Augustine’s University in the English Department. I transitioned back to public school teaching in Wake County Public Schools and taught 6th and 8th grade language arts for four years at two middle schools in Cary, NC. During this time, I completed my Master in Public Administration degree from North Carolina Central University in 1996 from which I was accepted into the doctoral degree program in Educational Leadership at the University of NC at Chapel Hill. I completed my doctoral degree in 2007 while serving as the director of curriculum and instruction at the NC Dept. of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. I am the youngest of the five adopted children of Augusta B. (deceased March 2007) and Frank L. Turner (deceased December 2000). I live a life of service to others and enjoy traveling to the Caribbean when I can get away from work.
