We will feature Indiana Correctional Industries’ business operations. We will discuss how their training, skills development, employment opportunities, reentry team/ focus and post-release employer partners are making a difference not only to the incarcerated individuals but also in their communities. Reimagining Institutional Corrections with the Virginia Model Room 101 B TRACK: Operations Overview: The Virginia Department of Corrections has reimagined what effective prison management can look like at Lawrenceville Correctional Center. Lawrenceville once led the Department in overdose deaths, contraband cell phones and illicit drugs. The need for a culture change was evident. Instead of focusing on a purely punitive approach, the Virginia Department of Corrections team used Lawrenceville to implement an incentive-based model to create a community of accountability. This approach emphasizes individual engagement and ownership of outcomes. Participants will learn how the team developed incentives, the challenges of changing mindsets among the inmate population and staff, as well as lessons learned as the Virginia Model expands to other facilities. This presentation will provide information pertaining to identifying violent offenders and how they are managed very differently while on post-release control.
