Suicide treatment-interfering behaviors, including verbal and physical aggression, evaluation refusal, and illicit substance intoxication. Based on 14 years of clinical experience in corrections, as well as evidenced-based assessment tools, this workshop will discuss three treatment-interfering behaviors commonly encountered in correctional suicide risk assessment and provide corresponding practical strategies mental health clinical staff can utilize to build confidence in their assessment skills. The Benefits and Challenges of Court-Ordered Mental Health Treatment [CME |CEU| Ψ CE] Room: 320 Primary Community of Focus: Behavioral Health Overview: This presentation will discuss the ACA standards for mental health treatment, specifically how they are applied to court-ordered mental health treatment units, the criteria and processes for treatment in those units, and involuntary psychotropic medication administration. We will examine the clinical, legal, and ethical dilemmas that healthcare staff may face when navigating the process of court-ordered mental health treatment. Focusing upon this topic will allow correctional and healthcare staff to glean a greater understanding of specific issues with these units and identify some effective techniques and best practices to enhance clinical care, streamline correctional systems, and provide support for staff who work with a difficult population. Learning Objectives: • Discuss the criteria for court-ordered mental health placement and treatment and applicable ACA mental health treatment standards. • Analyze clinical and ethical dilemmas that healthcare staff may navigate in the process. • Explore best practices for navigating the process and improving mental health care for these patients.
