Grief-Related Crisis in Custody: Managing the 72-Hour Destabilization Window Room 316 Primary Community of Focus: Prisons & Jails Overview: When incarcerated individuals receive notification that a close family member has died, facilities often face a period of emotional destabilization that can increase behavioral health risk, self-harm concerns and institutional disruption. Despite the frequency of these events, many correctional systems lack structured procedures for responding to bereavement notifications. This workshop introduces the concept of the 72-Hour Destabilization Window, the period immediately following death notification when emotional and behavioral volatility may increase. Participants will explore a structured response model that helps correctional staff manage grief-related crisis events while supporting institutional stability, staff safety and humane correctional practices.
