Moderator: Brian Baker , Warden, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Columbus, Ohio Speaker: Jenn Truxall , Communications Specialist, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Columbus, Ohio Commemoration With Purpose: How VADOC Builds Accountability Through Victim Awareness Initiatives Room 318 Primary Community of Focus: Adult Corrections Overview: Every year, the Virginia Department of Corrections’ Victim Services Unit leads agency-wide efforts to honor National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and other victim awareness observances, using them as meaningful opportunities to strengthen empathy, accountability and staff unity across the correctional system. This workshop explores how purposeful commemoration can serve as both education and engagement, helping staff and individuals in custody/under supervision better understand the impact of crime and the importance of victim rights. Participants will gain an inside look at the Virginia Department of Corrections’ strategies for developing and delivering awareness programming, highlighting how these observances foster a deeper understanding of victim experiences, reinforce the Virginia Department of Corrections’ commitment to safety and dignity, and support the agency’s broader mission of preparing individuals for successful reentry. Overview: This workshop explores the delivery of competency-based professional development programming to correctional leaders by the Warden Exchange program expert team. The workshop will highlight practical strategies that strengthen organizational culture and outcomes. Participants will be invited to explore how the Warden Exchange program equips leaders with essential transformational leadership competencies, such as procedural justice, vision-casting, emotional intelligence and values‑based decision‑making to drive measurable improvements. Through real-world examples and insights from program graduates, meaningful, practical changes for correctional leadership. These insights will be complemented by a discussion of program data findings and program participants’ feedback. Moderator: Leigha Scott , Research Associate, Prison Fellowship, Abilene, Texas Speakers: Craig Gable , Warden, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Lincoln, Nebraska; Kerensa Lockwood , Senior Director, Prison Fellowship, Tallahassee, Florida Changes in Food Safety Knowledge and Application of the Model Food Safety Practices for Correctional Facilities Room 316 Primary Community of Focus: Prisons & Jails Overview: A recent analysis found that foodborne outbreaks in correctional settings were nearly six times as large as those in other settings. Many of the outbreaks identified recurring, but preventable food safety issues. In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Federal Bureau of Prisons developed Model Food Safety Practices for Correctional Facilities, guidance tailored to correctional settings. A pair of surveys of correctional workers captured knowledge and application of food safety practices before and after the guidance was released. This workshop will review the survey data, provide reflections on the application of the Model Practices from facilities and solicit input on additional tools and needs. participants will learn about how these leadership practices have contributed to
