Although only an estimated 2.4% of incarcerated persons engage in self-injurious behavior, this population accounts for a large portion of resource utilization. When there is discord between staff, it is often someone diagnosed with these disorders that is at the center of the angst. Focus will include understanding the motivation of this behavior and dispelling myths, coupled with a variety of strategies which will assist staff to engage with this type of incarcerated person in improving adjustment and reducing both aggressive and disruptive behavior. Learning Objectives: • Describe at least one myth about personality disorders and self-injurious
behavior in corrections. • Identify at least two clinical reasons
incarcerated persons with a personality disorder engage in self-injurious behavior. • Identify a strategy or intervention for both non-clinical and clinical staff to reduce the frequency of self-injurious behavior in those diagnosed with a personality disorder.
