Transforming Nebraska Corrections: How a Peer-Supported Approach to Holistic Well-Being is Turning the Tides Room W232 B/C Overview: The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services has implemented the 5 Key Model for Reentry and Well-Being Development in all prisons. This model approaches rehabilitative services from a holistic perspective, offering opportunities for growth in the five key areas of healthy thinking patterns, positive relationships, positive social engagement, effective coping strategies and meaningful work trajectories. This presentation will discuss how positive peer support is a driving force and component of transformational change: and how Intentional Peer Support has served a pivotal role in preventive action (before prison), rehabilitative services (during prison) and successful reintegration (after prison). Primary Presenter: Dawn-Renee Smith , Deputy Director Rehabilitative Services, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Lincoln, Nebraska Presenter 2: Kasey Parker , Executive Director, Mental Health Association of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska
Sustaining Proficiency through Training: An Army Approach Room W240 B Overview: The Army’s approach to training allows organizations to prepare and execute small unit missions all the way to full scale combat operations. In the Army correctional environment, we use these same ways of training to accomplish initial training and annual sustainment training for staff. This deliberate training can often be difficult to conduct due to various constraints. As such, planning, resourcing, validating and assessing training allows organizations to maximize time and proficiency while ensuring staff are ready to begin their duties or increase their knowledge on daily and emergency procedures. This presentation will provide organizations with a way to conceptualize, plan, assess and conduct training to fit their needs. Primary Presenter: Trevor C. Preston , SFC, U.S. Army, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Presenter 2: Joshua L. Buchholz , SGT, U.S. Army, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Presenter 3: Kevin N. Hyden , 2LT, U.S. Army, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas
