Presenter 3: Angie McCown , Director, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Austin, Texas Gender-Responsive Services in Reentry Room W240 B Overview: This workshop will review gender-responsive principles for working with reentering women, particularly those entering community supervision upon release. Drawing upon “Adopting a Gender-Responsive Approach for Women in the Justice System: A Resource Guide” from the Council of State Governments Justice Center, participants will leave with a better understanding of the importance and effectiveness of gender-responsive programming and case management. Participants will also hear directly from two Second Chance Act/ Substance Use Disorder grantees supporting women both during their incarceration and as they transition back into their communities. Holistic Employee Wellness: Texas Department of Criminal Justice Collaborative Approach Room W240 C Overview: The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has collaborated across divisions to address employee wellness to include the creation of an Employee Support Services Section for wellness and support, Peer Support Teams for response to the immediate aftermath of a critical event, Staff Impact Teams for the provision of crisis intervention two to four weeks post critical event and an Elevate Everyday initiative for infusion of wellness in all aspects of an employee’s professional and personal life. This session will offer a panel of Texas Department of Criminal Justice wellness trailblazers to share lessons learned, and to discuss future initiatives such as Post Critical Incident Seminars, and better access to mental health clinicians.
