Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Columbus, Ohio Speakers: Mike Davis , Bureau Chief, Office of Recreation and Religious Services, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Columbus, Ohio; Jay Forshey , Warden, Noble Correctional Institution, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Caldwell, Ohio Giving Incarcerated Mothers and Their Babies a Healthy Start with Conditional Release, Support and Supervision Accountability [CEU] Room 202-A Between 2013 and 2020, the Minnesota Department of Corrections incarcerated an increasing number of pregnant women, most of whom had relatively short sentences. Pregnant people who give birth in prison are separated from their infants within days, yet most plan to be primary caregivers upon their release. In 2020, the Minnesota Legislature passed The Healthy Start Act allowing the commissioner of corrections to conditionally release infants’ mothers to community-based alternatives, under certain criteria and time limits. Join us as we share the policies, processes, partnerships and people that are making Healthy Starts possible. We’ll share key statistics to date, challenges and successes through real stories and impacts. This workshop is a vital element of the initiative, serving to distribute knowledge and equip participants

Pathway to Retention: Re-engineering Correctional Training Academies Room 205-A The Moss Group (TMG) was awarded BJA funding to examine correctional academy training. In collaboration with key correctional organizations, TMG’s comprehensive national scan included administering a national survey of DOC academies, conducting curriculum reviews, evaluating curricula designs and delivery and conducting on-site observations, including reviewing academy organization and infrastructure, technology and training outcomes and facilitating staff interviews and focus groups. This workshop will present the efforts made by a panel of state DOCs participating in the original training scan to re-engineer corrections training based on feedback, criteria and information shared with them upon completion of the review. Soul Care: Utilizing Faith-based Partnerships to Promote Personal and Community Connection Room 202-B This session will provide participants with insights into establishing relationships with faith-based organizations and provide examples of initiatives that will result in organizational exemplary practices. When provided the opportunity to function as partners with correctional institutions in rehabilitative practices, faith-based organizations can enhance efforts around issues of rehabilitation, reentry and crime victim care. These partnerships have the potential for ensuring that institutional handoffs (prison to home) become opportunities to restore human relationships that lead to safer, healthier communities for all citizens.
