there being a dramatically different mechanism of death while incarcerated, there are significant steps that can be taken to lower death rates by suicide in prisons and jails that may be more advantageous than in the free community. This will take a deep dive into those practical steps. A brief discussion of new theories and treatments of suicide will also be presented. Learning Objectives: • Participants will be able to understand that death by suicide is not exclusively a mental health problem. • Participants will be able to learn that several interventions have been able to stem the tide of suicide, with corrections leading the way. • Participants will be able to challenge the myth that a person who wants to die will find a way to do so regardless of measures taken.
