For us to be safe, effective and confident in our role, we must have the knowledge and skills to perform at our highest level and know the scope, standards and expectations of the role. This workshop will discuss the expectations of the correctional nurse as published by the American Nurses Association Corrections Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, 3 rd Edition (2020). Learning Objectives: • Participants will be able to list two inmate rights related to healthcare. • Participants will be able to discuss the two areas of Standards of Corrections Nursing Practice from the American Nurses Association Corrections Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice (2020). • Participants will be able to list three basic tenets the correctional nurse needs to follow/remember. It is clinical best practice to offer all FDA-approved medications for the treatment of OUD, including methadone, in all settings, including carceral settings. Managing substance withdrawal in carceral settings is important as deaths due to unmanaged acute withdrawal are preventable. Counties, carceral administrators and carceral

Participants will hear from a correctional registered dietitian and physician with over 20 years of experience in health care and over 10 years in corrections (jails, prisons and juvenile detention facilities). The session will include an explanation of the nutrition assessment process for educating individuals needing therapeutic diets, food allergies, double portions and protein drinks. The assessment will be used to develop menus for food services. Finally, real life scenarios will be provided for participants to experience how correctional registered dietitians are the missing link in correctional health care. Learning Objectives: • Review the roles and responsibilities of a correctional registered dietitian. • Differentiate between the roles of medical providers and correctional registered dietitians. • Describe menus that match the corresponding diagnosis.
