Given the recent COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to remain vigilant of old, new and developing infectious diseases. The effects of these diseases can be unpredictable. For example, the recent bird flu outbreaks have resulted in mass culling of poultry resulting in price hikes of eggs nationwide. Furthermore, participants will be updated on the treatment of these diseases, how they are diagnosed and basic methods of prevention of transmission. Case presentations will also be discussed. Given the limitation of resources in healthcare and public safety, stabilizing the mental health of incarcerated individuals has not always been a priority. To effectively address and meet the needs of this underserved population, strategies must be developed to balance the community’s expectations and the reality of what is provided within a correctional facility. With the implementation of new strategies in the community and in jails, collaboration can occur to address this challenge. We will review how a multidisciplinary strategy can effectively address the behavioral health care needs of this population.
