D-2F Care and Treatment of Incarcerated Individuals at the End of Life: Medical and Administrative Implications ( Y CE, CE, CME) Track: Medical Room 203-A As the carceral population ages, and the comorbidities and disease burdens on individuals increase, correctional settings are more and more often tasked with ensuring appropriate end-of-life care. Administrators, site medical providers and healthcare professionals endeavor to prevent or relieve suffering as much as possible while preserving and respecting the patient’s wishes. Navigating the complicated medico/administrative implications of this landscape can be confusing. This presentation will address these end-of-life issues and review strategies to better prepare the patient and the medical and administrative team. Learning Objectives: • Participants will be able to describe two common barriers to engaging incarcerated patients in end-of-life conversations. • Participants will be able to identify two likely “end-of-life” questions posed to Administrators and consider how your Agency will respond. • Participants will be able to identify at least three decisions that should be discussed with the patient regarding end-of-life decisions. Insights and Strategies from a Team Who Were Incarcerated as Youth Track: Juveniles Room 202-B This workshop features a panel of speakers who were incarcerated as youth but have turned their lives around and are currently motivational speakers and consultants for youth facilities nationwide. The Messengers will share their experiences/insights into what is most effective in dealing with youth and facilitate discussions about issues in the juvenile justice systems and society. Learning Objectives: • Participants will gain insights into what are the most effective techniques when dealing with youth. • Participants will be introduced to the public speaking model as an effective tool in facilitating internal change in youth. • Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how powerful a positive relationship is in a youth’s development.
