In this workshop, the Virginia Department of Corrections, a Second Chance Act grantee, will discuss strategies to maintain safe and secure correctional facilities while supporting family connections. B-3A Reducing Inmate Idleness with K-9 Training and Veteran’s Dorm Programs Crystal Ballroom A Track: Prisons Program implementation is a necessary part of a successful correctional system. K-9 training programs and Veteran dorms have proven to be successful ways to reduce inmate idleness and decrease disciplinary issues within those populations. Giving inmates a purpose, such as training a dog, can provide them with motivation to follow the rules and complete the program, while also giving them skills they can use when they are released. The Veteran’s dorm program provides inmates with recognition for service to their country and an opportunity to continue to serve through community service projects. Partnering with volunteers is a key aspect of both programs’ success. Learning Objectives: 1.
