B-1A Gender Responsiveness: Florida’s Approach to Meeting the Needs of Females Crystal Ballroom A Track: Prisons This presentation will showcase the Florida Department of Corrections approach to managing females within its system, focusing on the incarcerated female, but also including information on meeting the needs of female staff working withing a traditionally male dominated industry. Central to the presentation will be the 2020 work group assigned to study gender responsiveness. This work group made recommendations to the FDC executive leadership team, resulting in changes that ensure Florida’s females are managed in a gender responsive, trauma informed way. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the principles of a gender responsive approach to the delivery of services to the incarcerated female. 2. Understand the Florida Department’s approach to managing the incarcerated female. 3.Understand the role females play in the agency from a historical perspective. B-1B Ohio’s Education Reboot Crystal Ballroom B Track: Jails/Prisons

In the last three years the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has embarked on transforming the education and employment opportunities provided to the incarcerated people of Ohio. In this time, they have built a wireless student network, procured 10,000 Chromebooks, increased college to all prisons, built a dual credit program with prior learning assessments and employed currently incarcerated in the community. This presentation will review these practices and talk about how they came to be, and more importantly why it was done. This presentation will inform other agencies in potential opportunities they may choose to engage in. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to explain how technology can be used to transform education inside facilities. 2. Participants will be able to understand prior learning assessment models and how it can be used to essentially grant dual credit for career technical and vocational training. 3. Participants will be able to understand the importance Ohio has placed on “normalizing” employment opportunities for the incarcerated.
