A-4D Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office: Rehabilitation Services and the Sheriff’s Transition and Reentry Team Resource Center Crystal Ballroom D Track: Reentry The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office offers various rehabilitation services to incarcerated individuals. In 2020, Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr., Ed.D opened the Sheriff’s Transition and Reentry Team (START) Resource Center, a first of its kind program that creates individualized rehabilitation plans for incarcerated individuals and individually curated reentry plans for post-incarceration support. In his observations of repeated and intergenerational incarceration during his over 30 years of experience in corrections, including his tenure with Rikers Island, Sheriff Toulon determined a comprehensive, individualized approach to rehabilitation and reentry alongside community services is required for successful reentry and reducing recidivism.

This workshop will assist participants by providing an overview of the U.S. Department of Education’s November 1, 2022, regulations for Pell reinstatement, workshopping a roadmap for success for correctional facility’s postsecondary education in prison programming and sharing resources that can help corrections prepare for new or additional postsecondary educational programming. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand how the Department of Education’s November 1, 2022, regulations provide corrections with an unprecedented opportunity to ensure high quality postsecondary educational programming for people who are incarcerated. 2. Learn how one state corrections department is implementing postsecondary education programming. 3.Access a wide array of free resources that are available to them from ACA, the Department of Education and the Vera Institute of Justice.
