A-3H Bipolar Disorder: Separating Myths from Truths. A Review of the History, Diagnostic Formulation and Treatment Options for this Psychiatric Disorder (CE, CME, Y CE) Grand Ballroom 14 Track: MDST Treatment A review of healthcare epidemiologic tables shows that less than 5% of the U.S. population has a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. Yet it seems in the last several years, more and more people have been diagnosed. Working as a psychiatrist in corrections for the past eight years, I have seen multiple patients who have a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and after extensive review, I have questioned this diagnosis. This workshop will do several things including how to make a more precise and correct diagnosis, various treatment options, including old and new medications, as well as the required medical monitoring of those medications. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to improve skills to make the appropriate diagnosis of bipolar disorder. 2. Participants will be able to communicate a more clear understanding of the differential diagnosis of bipolar disorder including how it differs from attention deficit disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and personality disorder. 3.Participants will be able to identify appropriate FDA approved psychiatric interventions to treat bipolar disorder as well as the suggested medical monitoring for patients’ safety and longevity. Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), will present an inside account of the 2015 escape of two murderers from Clinton Correctional Facility — a maximum security prison in Northern New York. The real story is even more compelling than the news reports and the “Showtime” dramatization. The initial presentation will include an accurate description and chronology of events from planning to escape to capture and beyond, video of the actual route through the prison to the manhole taken hours after the escape, and the Governor’s coordination of law enforcement which led to the capture of inmate David Sweat and the death of inmate Richard Matt. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify steps to uncover similar escape plans and suspicious conduct. Understand the significant financial costs attributed to the event. Anticipate and address the loss of morale in facilities in the aftermath of the event. Explain the long-term value of administrative and criminal sanctions for staff. Identify strategies for 24/7 media afforded by interviews with the perpetrator(s). Understand the opportunities for improvement and change afforded. Identify security deficiencies which led to the escape. 3. Identify the chronology of events in this approach. Understand the ramifications of compromised security and civilian staff.
