Tennessee Department of Correction, Nashville, Tennessee; Joe Winkler , Assistant Secretary of Community Corrections, Florida Department of Corrections, Tallahassee, Florida A-3E Hope is Not a Strategy: A Proactive Approach to Correctional Litigation Crystal Ballroom E Track: Other — Staff Training Assistant Sheriff (AS) Rob Davidson of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) will discuss his approach to avoiding a class action lawsuit at the VCSO jail through partnership with Partner Risk Strategies (PRS) group of the jails’ medical provider. AS Davidson will discuss his fears of VCSO’s jails suffering the financial and operational challenges brought on by federal court judges and lawyers. VCSO and PRS proactively evaluated six main litigious areas: medical, mental health, dental, ADA compliance, COVID-19 requirements and custodial regulations. VCSO and PRS will walk participants through the creation of Class GAP Analysis (CGA) audit tools for these areas and their uses in litigation prevention. Learning Objectives: 1. Learn about the past and current cost of correctional litigation in the United States and the increases in litigation over the last decade. 2. Learn how to identify areas of vulnerability within your facility and determine your level of risk for litigation. 3.Learn about successful correctional models that have obviated litigation (class and individual cases) and learn about successful models resulting from post-litigation. 4.Learn about available tools and methodologies to identify necessary resources for your facility. While each population has their own unique challenges, this workshop will explore and discuss how to effectively manage the needs of the individual while providing proper supervision and support. Learning Objectives: 1. Learn how to manage registered sex offenders in the community and support their success on supervision. 2. Explore how to work with geriatric offenders on supervision and provide them with the best resources for managing their medical health in the community. 3. Discuss how mental illness affects an offender’s success on supervision and how to assist in accessing resources.
