This workshop will give participants a variety of activities that can be implemented on an individual or agency wide basis to encourage self-care among people in the field. Learning Objectives: 1. We will highlight the intersectionality of facility climate with youth behavior, preventative universal strategies and staff roles in supporting and promoting a healthy, safe and productive facility climate for all — youth and staff. Universal strategies linked to function-based logic, addressing youth noncompliance and de-escalating aggression will be intertwined with facility climate perspectives and ongoing coaching and technical assistance to support all staff implementation. A-3A Journey to Eliminate Restrictive Housing in the Virginia Department of Corrections Crystal Ballroom A Track: Prisons For the past ten years, the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) has progressively reduced its use of Restrictive Housing in its correctional facilities. In January 2020, the agency initiated the final step of this journey, to fully eliminate the practice through the use of enhanced structured and unstructured programs for a minimum of four hours per day. The agency is moving forward with a vision of a Restorative Housing initiative that focuses on programs geared towards individual risk and needs, diverting vulnerable populations and long-term public safety. This workshop will provide an overview of the steps taken in Virginia to lead the agency towards this progressive reform, to include best practices and lessons learned. Learning Objectives: 1. Learn the steps used to develop system wide change to reform the Restrictive Housing program. 2. Learn about the diversionary programs and cool down rooms developed in Virginia to reduce its Restrictive Housing population. 3.Consider the lessons learned in Virginia for implementation in other jurisdictions.
