A-2H Peer Support/Recovery Coaches Program: Empowering Peers to Rise to the Challenge of Recovery (CE) Grand Ballroom 14 Track: MDST Treatment TDCJ’s Peer Support Coach (PSC) Training Program offers select inmates formal peer recovery support education and training so that they may serve in a full-time capacity, assisting their inmate peers in establishing and maintaining recovery. PSCs act as role-models, inspiring peers with first-hand experience, and empowering them through provision of self-directed recovery support services. PSCs operate in conjunction with facility staff to assist administrators in recognizing and addressing specific recovery-related challenges to develop and provide coordinated responses; while simultaneously promoting the well-being of inmates with substance use disorders and preparing their peers to maintain a crime-free existence following release. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to calculate the prevalence of substance use disorder in the inmate population, as demonstrated by TDCJ and DOJ statistics. 2. Participants will be able to identify the four major recovery supports and the ten principles of recovery, as defined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMSHA). 3.Participants will be able to determine how inmate peer support specialists are instrumental in helping their peers navigate the recovery process during incarceration and improve self-efficacy by imparting knowledge of recovery resources, providing guidance in the development of wellness and recovery action plans and encouraging pro-social involvement.
