A-2A Restorative Justice, Facilitated Dialogue and the Circle Process Crystal Ballroom A Track: Prisons The Restorative Justice, Facilitated Dialogue and the Circle Process is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the concepts of restorative justice, which is often listed as the fifth purpose of punishment. Restorative justice has been used in those countries whose delivery of justice is primarily adversarial and the concepts of restorative justice have not generally been included in sentencing. This workshop is designed to provide an understanding that providing safety is the primary consideration, offenders need be held accountable for their behavior and victims and communities harmed by crime are restored. The second part of the workshop is to provide examples how restorative justice actually works. Learning Objectives: 1. Develop an understanding of an alternative to traditional adversarial justice. 2. Understand basic principles and values for restorative justice. 3.Review and analyze facilitated dialogue and the circle process. A-2B How to Combat Contraband Cellphones: Available Resources and Opportunities for Technical Assistance Crystal Ballroom B Track: Jails The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has launched an initiative to develop resources on contraband interdiction systems and practices to combat cellphones in correctional facilities. As part of the initiative, this workshop reviews the current state of the issues associated with, and strategies aimed to combat, contraband cellphones. The workshop also discusses the opportunities through the BJA-sponsored initiative for state and local agencies to request no-cost training and technical assistance in the area of contraband cell phone interdiction and management. Learning Objectives: 1. Describe what type of cellphone-related challenges and issues correctional agencies across the country experience. 2. Identify how and where to seek resources and technical assistance on the interdiction of contraband cellphones. 3.Learn more about the various interdiction strategies agencies are using to combat contraband cellphones.
