On May 12 at 10:21 a.m., inmate Gonzalo Lopez (1349716) was placed in a secure section of a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) transportation bus for his transport to the W. J. Estelle Unit for an optometry appointment. Slightly over 2½ hours later, inmate Lopez had removed his restraints, cut his way out of the secure section of the transport bus, attacked a transport officer and escaped from custody. 22 days later, inmate Lopez was located and killed in a shootout with authorities. During his days on escape, authorities report Lopez killed five innocent individuals. The presenters will provide an overview of the incident, discuss the outcome
