Program Coordinator, University of Nebraska Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska D-2G Creating a Peer Companion Program: Initial Steps, Successes and Challenges (CE) Grand Ballroom 13 Track: Mental Health This presentation will review the early implementation steps of a program to allow peers to provide continuous monitoring of other residents who are in a crisis status. The peers providing the monitoring were trained in basic mental health, suicide prevention and essential processes to coordinate their work with security staff. Frequent meetings between treatment

staff and the peers, led to improvements and upgrades to the program that have made it more effective and meaningful for the peers providing the monitoring as well as the peers in crisis. The evolution of the program and future steps will be presented in detail. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to summarize the conceptual basis for a peer monitoring program. 2. Participants will be able to explain the potential success and challenges of a peer monitoring program. 3.Participants will be able to identify how to use the developed process and tools to implement a similar program in their facility.
