Speakers: Sytisha Claycomb , COO, Operation New Hope, Jacksonville, Florida; Reggie Fullwood , President and CEO, Operation New Hope, Jacksonville, Florida; Amanda Mahan , CCO, Operation New Hope, Jacksonville, Florida D-2D Implementing Behavioral Intervention: Emphasizing Effective Interpersonal Communication and De-escalation Skills to Increase Safety and Compliance Crystal Ballroom D Track: Jails As agencies prepare to implement behavioral intervention policy, it is concurrently important to develop a comprehensive training plan that emphasizes the need to utilize effective interpersonal communication skills and to de-escalate situations. For many years, use of force trainings have given only brief references to these subjects, while spending most of the focus on when to actually use force. This workshop highlights the work of correctional agencies that have implemented behavioral intervention policy and training practices and will share their strategies for preparing staff. This will include how to implement training after making a policy change, getting buy-in from the leadership and the union and creating a training team. Learning Objectives: 1. To identify the agency’s training priorities and establish a training plan and team that develop the training material and relay information as needed. 2. To identify what resources will be needed to support the implementation of the training plan (e.g., CIT Trained staff, Body Worn Camera equipment/training for staff, Automation of the BI/UOF Packet, Investigations Training, etc.). 3. To research information relative to your agency, as to provide site-specific data re: the offender population (mental health, recovery services data), as well as labor

D-2C Through Employment, We Empower: Building a Statewide Reentry Network Crystal Ballroom C Track: Reentry People returning from incarceration face a multitude of barriers including limited access to employment, transportation and housing. Without these, people are less connected to their communities and therefore, far more likely to recidivate. This cycle of incarceration increases rates of crime and unemployment, which are drains on the tax base and overall economy. For 20+ years, Operation New Hope has provided support and training to people returning from incarceration to help them become productive, responsible citizens. This saves millions of dollars by avoiding the repeated cost of incarceration and lost tax revenue and helps break the cycle of incarceration and poverty. That’s why we are building a Statewide Reentry Network to serve more. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will understand the collateral consequences of Criminal Justice System through a discussion of the barriers people face following incarceration. 2. Participants will learn about Operation New Hope’s nationally recognized Ready4Work reentry program and our 4-pronged approach (case management and mental health, supportive services, job training and job placement assistance) designed to ensure each client succeeds at reconnecting to the workforce, their families and community. 3.Participants will learn about Operation New Hope’s strategic plan to build a Statewide Reentry Network to meet the critical needs of the thousands of people who return home every month from Florida’s jails and prisons. Moderator: Gretchen Hamm , Senior Director of Strategic Planning & Compliance, Operation New Hope, Jacksonville, Florida
